It’s hard to criticize the beauty of the King James Version (KJV) of the Christmas story in Luke 2. Much like the Lord’s Prayer with all its outdated language (art, Thy, trespass, Thine), there’s no updating the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. Mary is Joseph’s “espoused wife, being great with child.” The shepherds were “sore afraid” when the glory of the Lord appeared. And all of it “came to pass” in those days.
“I wish there was a way to know we were in the good old days before we actually left them.” That was a class motto of the 8th grade graduation class at Ladd, IL.
My grandfather was one who on Halloween would move the outhouse about three feet so that on a dark Halloween night, the boys were quite surprised when they moved his outhouse in what he called the “Good Old Days.” Instead of moving it, they fell in!
No sooner is Thanksgiving over and we jump right ino Christmas. Honestly, I don’t see anything wrong with that, as long as we remember the true meaning of Christmas. Shopping is okay if you enjoy it. Gifts are nice too, but we must always remember the greatest gift of all, the gift of love.
Dear Editor, Responding to the “Should council members be held to a higher standard?” The answer is “YES.” All personnel who work for city government, including volunteers, work for the citizens of Virginia. We do not work for you. You work for us. People vote and elect the leaders of the departments they are responsible for. The lesser ranking subordinates carry our policy and procedures as written and approved by the supervisor’s division chief.
The Beardstown High School Wrestling team opened their season last Monday by traveling to Petersburg to take on Bethalto Civic Memorial as well as getting in some junior varsity action against PORTA-AC Central.

There is little doubt that new PORTA-AC boys’ basketball coach Steven Price would have loved to win the Championship at the Saukee Turkey Tournament but he’s surely proud of his team after the Bluejays came away with a 3-1 record and the Sportsmanship Award. Only a frustrating loss to the host Saukees in game three kept the Jays from going unbeaten and hoisting the first-place trophy.
It was a very solid start for the Beardstown boys’ basketball team with a 3-1 record and a second-place finish in their own season opening Tiger Classic tournament. With learning to win close games high on Coach Eric Anderson’s team syllabus this year, close wins over Augusta Southeastern and Brown County and a good effort in the title game against West Central should pay future dividends.
Following wins over South County and Carrollton to open the Waverly Tournament, the Triopia-Meredosia-Virginia Lady Trojans lost to South Fork and North Mac to finish in Fourth Place and fall to 3-2 on the year.
Due to the holiday, each of the area Junior High basketball teams played only one game last week. Beardstown Tigers: Beardstown played on the road at Rushville on Monday with both teams dropping a tough one. The 7th graders trailed 8 to 7 after a quarter and 13 to 9 at the half before cutting the deficit to just one at 17 to 16 after three quarters. The Rockets would outscore the young Tigers 6 to 2 in the final frame to take the win 23 to 18.
The Triopia Trojan boys’ basketball team went 1-3 in the opening week of the season, losing three close games, to claim Fourth Place in the Gene Bergschneider Turkey Tournament in New Berlin.
