Virginia Board approves cruise trip for seniors

At the November 20th meeting, the Virginia School Board heard from an adult representative of the senior class regarding the possibility of their senior trip being a cruise.

The adult representative stressed that once on the boat, the kids would only be allowed to purchase items by using a card that was given to them from the cruise line. It would strictly prohibit any alcohol buying due to their age. If any off-boat excursions were taken, chaperones would be responsible for watching the students and the cruise line would not leave anyone behind. The class has saved up approximately $10,000 and would pay any other out of pocket expenses. All the cruise line needs is a certified birth certificate and a driver’s license. The school would require parents to sign a release of liability since the trip is after graduation. The board did approve this request unanimously.

Diversity is nothing new to Beardstown schools

So many in Beardstown can remember there has always been diversity, mainly because of the meat packaging plant, no matter what name it has or is known by. The schools are not unaffected by this.

As families from other cultures and countries moved to Beardstown, so did their lifestyles and languages. This presented unique challenges for teachers trying to teach those children and trying to deal with each child’s lifestyle, beliefs and of course, the language barrier.

Lore “King” Bader

Looking Back – A King, ice cream, rock and Braves

While researching a topic, I often stumble upon something I wasn’t searching for but nonetheless found it to be of interest. Here’s a few I’ve collected over the yearsLet’s begin in Bader over in Schuyler County. Located about four miles north of Browning, Bader began life as Osceola in 1870. The name was changed to Baders in 1872, honoring William Bader who operated the grain elevator. A U.S. Post Office opened on Oct. 8, 1972, the same year the community’s name was changed to Bader.
