Virginia Council favors water, sewer rate hikes

July bills for water and sewer service in Virginia likely will be a little higher as a result of action taken by the Virginia City Council Monday evening.
On first reading, the council unanimously approved a $5 increase in the basic water rate, making the charge for the first 2,000 gallons $38. For each additional thousand gallons, the rate will go up by 50 cents.
Alderman Dale Bell said the city has taken every possible step to avoid an increase, but has run out of options. “This (increase) hurts me just as much as it hurts you,” Bell said.
