Saloons and gambling were once popular in Beardstown, circa 1850

Gambling flourished in Beardstown at one time and there were a lot of local saloons.
Going through a box of old papers, I found a copy of a letter written by someone who had visited Beardstown way back in 1848. He starts his letter, “In the spring of 1848 I spent a week or two in Beardstown. This was an ambitious place; there was a brick tavern and a landing, and it was the import and the export of nearly all the saleable products from a large part of the state. The travelers between Beardstown and Springfield would rarely be out of sight of heavily loaded wagons carrying out the local products or bringing in the merchant’s goods.”
