Iwo Jima and the Block family

The Beardstown High School graduating class of 1939 would get together every five years at alumni time. It was a good class, they enjoyed the Friday night party, the Saturday morning brunch at the Methodist Church, the Alumni banquet and again for another brunch on Sunday morning for those still in Beardstown. One year the Sunday bunch was at the Norman and Betty Korsmeyer home, located high on the bluff across the river from Beardstown. I remember sitting out on their porch with the beautiful view of Beardstown and the Illinois River valley. There was Norm Korsemeyer, Jack Burris, Pat Cowen and I. all were veterans, Jack, Pat and I in Europe, Norm in the Pacific. The conversation led to talking about Iwo Jima, Norman wouldn’t say much except to tell us he was there for 14 days before he was wounded, and that he had kept in touch with a few of his Iwo Jima friends
