Beardstown area produces good pitchers

With good help, I have been taken to a couple of enjoyable athletic events. Randy Ralston (BHS Class of 1974) is a retired park Director of the Bloomington Recreation Department. Randy worked for me at the Beardstown Park District while in high school and college and now lives here in Normal with his wife. 40 years later he has taken my arm to see recent athletic games. The first time was to the Illinois High School Coaches Association All Star Basketball game which was held up in Pontiac. There were four games. Class 1 & 2 girls and then Class 3 & 4 girls, followed by the same with the boys. It was a well-played All-Star game, and we were able to see the two players who are going to go to the University of Illinois, one player who will be going to Illinois State and all the others who will be headed to some college to continue playing basketball.
I called Randy again to ask if he would take me; this time I knew that Rick Dour, a BHS Junior, would be pitching. Rick has earned several honors with his pitching during the past year for Robin Lewis’s Beardstown High School team, and is the outstanding high school pitcher in the Central Illinois area. This summer Rick is enjoying playing with a traveling team made up from a number of players from different towns. He and Dalton Leischner are the Beardstown boys on that team along with the catcher who is from Virginia High School. Most of the players come from South of Springfield.
