Thomas “Tom” Ramon Sorrells

    Thomas “Tom” Ramon Sorrells, 63, of Petersburg passed away on Thursday, Dec. 31, 2020, at Memorial Medical Center.
    He was born on March 10, 1957, in Rushville,  the son of Mervin and Glenna (Wear) Sorrells.  He married Monica Jones on May 24, 1980, in Mt. Sterling.
    Tom earned a bachelor’s degree from Eureka College. He worked as a teacher at El Paso, IL for one year, and later served as a substitute teacher at Midwest Central (formerly known as Forman) for three years. He went on to teach at San Jose, IL for four years. Tom spent the majority of his career teaching physical education and health at A-C Central School District for 28 years.
    Over the years, Tom was a devoted coach to many different sports teams where he taught and also coached several years at PORTA Jr.-Sr. High School. Tom led the Chandlerville Junior High basketball team to the state tournament in 1991. He also coached junior high baseball and softball, as well as high school girls basketball and softball throughout his teaching career.
    He was a member of the Petersburg United Methodist Church. Tom treasured his grandkids, especially when it came time to watch them participate in their school and sports activities or spoil them. He was an avid Cardinals baseball fan and enjoyed traveling. Tom was a man of faith and loved spending time with his family.
    Tom is survived by his wife, Monica; three children, Andrea (Chad) Ramm of Auburn, Josh (Larissa) Sorrells of Beardstown, and Abby (Kalvin) Simmons of Petersburg; four grandchildren, Tucker and Barker Sorrells, and Cooper and Carly Ramm; five siblings, Mervin “Butch” (Dee) Sorrells Jr., Stephen (Bonnie) Sorrells, Diane (David) Vermillion, Brenda (Wil) Sheppard, and Lora (Bill) Llewellyn, all of Mt. Sterling.
    Tom was preceded in death by his parents.  
    The family is being served by Hurley Funeral Home in Petersburg with plans for cremation. A graveside service will be held at Hersman Cemetery in Hersman, IL on Friday, Jan. 8, 2021, at 2 p.m. Due to the CDC guidelines, it is asked that everyone who attends the service wear a mask and practice social distancing.
