Lady Tigers and Lady Trojans lose

It was a light load for both the Beardstown Lady Tiger and the Triopia-Meredosia-Virginia Lady Trojan basketball teams with just one game each last week.  Beardstown hosted North Fulton on Monday.  Triopia, who went on the road to Carrollton on Monday, was scheduled to play Calhoun on Thursday but the contest was postponed.

Looking Back – Virginia, there is a Santa Claus

This is a story about faith, love, beauty and romance. Though this story is well over a hundred years old, I believe you will find it as enjoyable today as those who first read it in the closing years of the 19th century.

I hope you will share this story with others. It serves as a beacon of hope in these troubling times.

In 1897, little Virginia O’Hanlon wrote the following letter to the New York Sun:

Complaints on leaf burning

Virginia residents Krista and Joseph Edwards complained to Virginia City Council about burning of leaves in the creek bed at the corner of S. Stowe and E. Beardstown St. and others who burn within the city.

Krista asked that the city consider cutting back on burning allowed or possibly even banning like some other cities have done. She remarked that she and others have breathing problems which prevent their enjoyment of the outdoors and suggested that people should mulch leaves or compost them to reduce burning.

Trojan Boys crush Eagles

The Triopia-Meredosia-Virginia Trojans dropped a tough WIVC game at arch-rival Routt to open last week then came back to blast the Liberty Eagles on Friday at home.

At the Routt dome, the Rockets slowly pulled away from the Trojans to pick up a 43 to 32 victory.  Routt led 13 to 7 after a quarter and 23 to 13 at the half.  They made it 37 to 25 after three quarters then took the air out of the ball in the fourth, allowing the Trojans to cut into the lead by just a single digit in the low

Cougars claw Lady Trojans

There was only one game on the docket last week for the Triopia-Meredosia-Virginia Lady Trojans.  Unfortunately, it ended in a loss 44 to 28 loss to West Central in an important Western Illinois Valley Conference game.

Redbirds take two wins

The Virginia Redbirds were able to outfly the Eagles of Liberty last week but were no match for the Cougars of Illini Central.  The seventh grade Birds knocked off Liberty 44 to 19 while the eighth-grade squad won 35 to 19.

Trojans crush Rockets

It was a good week for the Triopia-Meredosia-Virginia Trojan high school boys’ basketball team as they completely dismantled the Rushville-Industry Rockets on the road to start the week, winning 61 to 35.  And although some say there is no such thing as a good loss, Coach Rich Thompson had to be happy with his team’s performance, except their free throw shooting, in a close 36 to 29 loss to a highly regarded Camp Point team at home on Saturday.

Virginia Junior High Basketball

The Virginia Redbird 7th grade boys’ basketball team won two of three games last week to move over .500 for the season with a record of 7-6.

Meanwhile the 8th grade squad lost two heartbreakers in a three-loss week to fall to 3-10 on the year. Things started with a 38 to 25 home win over Greenview for the younger guys. The Birds were up 19 to 11 at the half but Greenview cut it to 25 to 21 after three.  A strong fourth quarter put it away for Virginia. Paxton P. scored 14 points, Tylan C. had 10, Cooper L. scored eight, Dace M. had four and Remi G. scored two for the winners.

Lady Trojans win twice

The Triopia-Meredosia-Virginia Lady Trojans continued their winning ways with two victories last week to move to 5-2 on the season.   On the road on Monday, the Trojans rallied in the second half to defeat Greenfield-Northwestern 39 to 33. Triopia jumped out to a 9 to 4 lead after a quarter, but the Tigers came back to tie it up at thirteen at the half. The Trojans would win both the third and fourth quarters, t
