Trivia Too – Cats make for great distractions

There is so much stress in the world today. Trains are turning over with chemicals which start big fires, the weather has been so unpredictable and harsh in many places, and the conflicts between countries seem to be increasing. Maxine McQueen, a favorite columnist that I’ve quoted before, wrote this stress-free story about her two cats which I found to be entertaining. “Fortunately, I have my menagerie to focus my mind on happy things. I have two cats with enormous patience.

Trivia Too – Sounds of the calliope

When I was 12 years old, I always became very excited when I heard the calliope.  The calliope is a musical instrument, and at that time, created music by the use of steam.  So the employees on the steamboats had to continually shovel the coal to maintain enough steam for the calliope.  The calliope music was so shrill that you could hear it miles below the river and miles above the river and you knew that the showboat was coming.

Trivia Too – The dogs of my life

The dog days of summer are known to be from July 3 to August 11 which are supposedly going to be the hottest days of the summer, and not so much about dogs. But, I’m going to tell you about each dog I’ve owned and its experience with me.

When I was born, the family had a dog. It was a bulldog, not one with a pug face, but it was about two feet tall. Its name was Buster. That dog was a watchdog and was always in the yard when I was allowed to sit on a blanket in the yard.

The match will be for the championship of the world and will be the first world championship fight staged in Illinois for years.

Trivia Too – Illinois, home of many stars

I have always been proud of Beardstown and even additionally proud of Illinois.  I was never a celebrity, but I’m surprised at the number of celebrities who were born or have lived in Illinois at one time.

For example, Dick and Jerry Van Dyke came out of Danville.  Betty White was born in Oak Park.  Others born in Illinois from a column recently published by Bill Flick are Raquel Welch, Robin Williams, Pat Sajak, Walt Disney, Ernest Hemingway, Rock Hudson, Keke Palmer, Quincy Jones, Eddie Vedder, Melissa McCarthy, Harrison Ford, Jim Gaffigan, and Cindy Crawford.

Trivi Too – Movies over a lifetime

Editor’s Note: The late Roy Roberts loved to write and wrote numerous columns that we will continue to print until we run out. Enjoy! I have enjoyed listening to the radio through the years, but once movies arrived, that became my true interest in entertainment because the first movies that I paid a dime for were all westerns with Buck Jones, Tom Mix, Ken Maynard, and many other cowboys.
