The Virginia-Triopia Junior High Track teams had a very successful week placing first in the girls’ seventh grade, eighth grade and combined and first in the boys eighth grade and combined and second in seventh grade at Camp Point on Monday. On Tuesday, at the St. Agnes meet they placed second in all but the boys combined where they placed third.
With the spring weather wreaking havoc on the schedule, the Triopia-Meredosia-Virgnia softball team was only able to get one game in last week. Even that game was played through a tornado.
The Griggsville-Perry Tornadoes that is, as the Trojans blew them out 12 to 1 to even their record at 3-3 on the season. Triopia bolted to an early lead, scoring four in the first and five in the second before the Tornadoes scored their only run in the top of the third. The Triopia-Meredosia-Virginia baseball team started last week with a home win over Griggsville-Perry then dropped both ends of a Saturday doubleheader at home to Greenfield-Northwestern and PORTA-AC Central. The Trojans are now 3-8 on the season.
The Virginia-Meredosia-Triopia high school girls’ track team won a four-team meet in Jacksonville last week while the boys’ team finished fifth out of five teams.
The girls’ team dominated the sprints with Mylee Tracy, Faith Wingert, and Ta’Shia Allen going 1, 2, 3 in the 100-meters and Ava Petefish getting sixth. In the 200 meters, Wingert placed first, Tracy was second, Payten Petefish was fourth, Allen was fifth and Sophya Ogden was sixth. The 4x100 relay team of Wingert, Ava Petefish, Stanberry and Allen placed first and the team of Adelea Anderson, Olivia Hughes, Payten Petefish, and Shariya Randall placed third.
With the typically unpredictable spring weather in Illinois causing cancellations left and right, the Triopia-Meredosia-Virginia varsity ball teams have not been spared, but they did get some action in last week. Both teams traveled to Carrollton last Thursday and lost to the Hawks. The boys hosted the Athens Warriors on Friday and dropped that one also to fall to 2-6 on the season. The Lady Trojans record sits at 2-3.
Despite having just thirteen players and one senior Triopia-Meredosia-Virginia Head Softball Coach Ty Gebhardt likes what he has going on with this year’s Lady Trojan squad. Along with Assistant Coaches Kristy Gebhardt, Dean Werries, and Jeff Bennett, he will have to replace some very talented players from last year’s 15-12 team, but he feels as though he has plenty of talent to do so.
Despite having no seniors, Head Coach Rich Thompson and Assistant Adam Brockhouse led last years Triopia-Meredosia-Virginia baseball team to an 11-15 record. With everyone returning, expectations are much higher this year. Sophomore Grant Fricke did not play like a freshman last year, going 4-3 with a 1.85 ERA on the mound and hitting .398 with 17 RBI and 24 runs scored and will play a major role this year. Good numbers and good talent have the Virginia-Triopia-Meredosia track coaches excited about this coming year. Girls Coach Megan Werner, boys Coach Sam Black and Assistant Coach Abbie Link have a great mix of athletes at their disposal this year.
The Triopia-Meredosia-Virginia baseball team picked up a tight win over the Hardin Calhoun Warriors last week before falling to West Central and to East Dubuque. The Trojans record moves to 1-2 on the season.
The Triopia-Meredosia-Virginia Softball Team played in two, ten-run rule shortened five inning games last week, losing to Hardin-Calhoun 10 to 0 and beating Jacksonville High School 12 to 2. The Lady Trojans are now 2-2 on the young season.
