BHS Soccer gets double win

The Beardstown High School Soccer team picked up two home wins last week before falling on the road to Lincoln to finish the week.

On Monday, at the newly renovated BHS soccer field, the Tigers walloped Macomb high school with the varsity team winning 6-2.  The Tigers led 5-2 at the intermission and coasted to victory.  Marcos Lopez had a hat-trick (3 goals), Memo Hernandez added two goals, and Cesar Rodriguez scored one goal.  Michael Sevilla handed out two assists, and Joshua Severino, Lopez and Hernandez all had one helper.  The JV team also blasted the Bombers, winning by a score of 8-0.

Cade Ross nails hole-in-one for BHS

According to Google, an amateur golfer has a .01 % chance of getting a hole-in-one.  Stated another way, the odds of an amateur golfer hitting a hole-in-one are 12,500 to one.

So, when BHS golf coach Isaac Riddle sent in the news that during a meet at Hamilton last Wednesday, Tiger junior Cade Ross had hit “what could be described as the shot of the year…,” he was certainly understating the accomplishment.  For nearly all of the millions of golfers in the world, it never occurs, so it was certainly the shot of a lifetime for Cade.

Eighth graders and Seniors were recognized between the middle school and high school races.  Seniors Emma Ford-DeWitt, Ashley Gil, and Karim Gomez and eighth graders, Oscar Cortes, Jack DeWitt, Lucy Harrison, Liam Hymes and Jared Montoya were recognized.

Coach Jacki Kelly commented, “the three seniors will be missed next year, but best of luck to all the athletes as they finish out their cross-country seasons.”

Tigers outlast Rockets – BHS over Routt 46-44 in a wild one!

In a tale of two halves, the BHS Tigers did just enough in the second half to survive a valiant comeback attempt by the Routt Rockets and pull out a wild 46 to 44 home win last Friday night.  The Tigers built a 30-6 lead in the second quarter and led 30-14 at the half but failed to cover two onside kicks and gave up three touchdowns in the first three minutes of the third quarter to fall behind 38-30.  BHS still trailed 44-38 going into the fourth quarter.  With 10:20 left in the game, however, Tiger QB Ethan Heller willed his way to a 34-yard touchdown run, breaking several tackles along the way and followed it up with the 2-point conversion run to give the orange and black a 46-44 lead.  Although the scoring ended there, the excitement did not.

BHS Soccer wins home opener

The opening game at the newly renovated BHS Varsity Soccer field at the Beardstown Park District could not have worked out much better for the Tigers.  A great crowd fit comfortably into the spacious new bleachers, they could readily see the score and time remaining on the brand-new scoreboard and were able to get refreshments nearby at the newly opened concession stand.  Only the bathrooms remain to be finished at the freshly upgraded, JBS financed facility.

BHS Volleyball JV Consolation Champs at Mendon Tournament

The Beardstown Lady Tiger Varsity Volleyball team split a pair of games last week while the Junior Varsity squad traveled to the Mendon JV Tournament last Saturday and came home as Consolation Champs.  The JV Lady Tigers lost to Augusta 7-25 and 15-25 to open the tournament but bounced back to beat Rushville-Industry 25-21 and 25-17 and then beat Brown County 25-19, 14-25, and 15-12.  Lauren Coats led the Tiger offense with nine kills on the day.  Alora Logan ran the offense and handed out 18 assists while Autumn Bowman and Mia Playan led the way defensively with 13 digs and 10 digs respectively.  Coach Emily Riddle summed up the day succinctly stating, “Great team effort on the day for the Lady Tigers!”

Beardstown Middle School and High School Cross Country

The BHS Cross Country teams continue to rack up medals and personal bests on both the high school and junior high level.   On August 28 the Middle School team traveled to Havana to run at Veterans Park.  On a great night of running, all the athletes set new personal bests.  The boys took 2nd place as a team and the girls finished 4th.  Liam Hymes and Elsa DeWitt both earned medals.

Good Start for BHS Tiger Soccer

As expected, the new regime of the Beardstown High School Soccer team under Head Coach Francisco Hernandez and Assistant Coach Saul Munoz is off to a good start.  Although the season started with a defeat, the 3 to 1 loss to defending State Champion Quincy Notre Dame was nothing to be disappointed in.

Young Tigers in Regional Championship

The Beardstown Middle School softball team was not about to let what happened to them last year happen again.  A year ago, the number one seeded Tigers were upset in their opening game of Regional play.  This year the top seeded Tigers will take a 16-1 record into the Regional Championship game against Pittsfield Pikeland.  The title tilt was scheduled for Tuesday September 12.  Beardstown reached the championship game by virtue of a 3 to 1 win over Quincy Catholic last Saturday.

Tigers top Wolves

It certainly was not easy, but in the end the Beardstown Tiger football team came home from Pleasant Hill last Friday with a 34-14 win to move to one-one on the season. A relentless Christy Domitien, despite hobbling on a gimpy ankle late in the game, had a couple of great runs out of the QB position by Elizah Thomas and Ethan Heller and some timely turnovers keyed the Orange and Black victory.
