Bits and pieces

Bits & Pieces – A note from a tiny bat

“Hi there, I am a little bat. I do not suck your blood and I definitely don’t want to get stuck in your hair. That’s just gross! If I should accidentally fly into your house, please don’t hit me with cricket bats and brooms, it really hurts and I am so scared! It was an accident. I didn’t mean to scare you! I am just as scared as you are. I am fighting for my life and you are just scared. It is not a fair fight.

Bits & Pieces – Eating crow is better with pepper

Here I am, humbly eating my crow. Yep, I did it again!

Last week I wrote a column about a mysterious electric toothbrush that had been living at my house for a few weeks. Checking all my sources, I decided it belong to my grandson, Mason. Mason and Tarra were here a couple of weeks ago and I reminded Mason to take it home. That’s when he announced to me that it wasn’t his.

Bits & Pieces – Mysterious toothbrush appears

It was a wonderful weekend as Tarra and Mason came to spend a couple of days. But never fear, the woman with the magic fingers who can destroy phone settings basically by just breathing on it now has a new talent. Yep, and remember, you read it here first!

Bits & Pieces – Joys of parenting

I loved raising my kids, but like all parents, there are those moments when you wonder if you made the right decision.

One of the things I enjoyed most is the funny things they say. Many years ago, Art Linkletter hosted a comedy show called, “Kids Say the Darndest Things” from 1959-1967. Yes, I remember that show very well.

cooking soup

Bits & Pieces – Cooking like Mom nearly impossible

I admire those who know their way around the kitchen and know what they’re doing when they’re cooking.

I was raised by one of the best cooks ever---my mom. Although she never learned how to cook while growing up, she was married at 16 and a mother at the age of 21. As a young bride, she knew she had a lot to learn in the area of cooking. The one person that took her under her wing was her mother-in-law, my dad’s mom, Grandma Rahn.

confused brain

Bits & Pieces – A lost mind is not pretty

Our minds are a fascinating organ, one that works amazingly and sometimes it can be pretty scary.

I am one of “those” people who usually have too much commotion going on at the same time in my brain. I think it’s called chaos. We still function, do some things fairly correctly, yet our brain is working on the next event, next move, next comment, planning a meal, pick up the kids, trying to remember appointments and listen to someone else tell us how their day is going.

Bits & Pieces – Still a lot of winter left

One thing for sure----winter has officially arrived!

There’s a lot of haters out there about winter and the cold weather, but that’s understandable. I’ve always been a winter person and always chose cold weather over hot, humid weather. While many would stand toe-to-toe with me defending their reasoning for summer weather, I always held my ground.

Socked feet by the fireplace.

Bits & Pieces – Going from old to modern

Winter is here! Although many complain, it’s still going to happen every year as long as you live in this part of the nation.

There are also a lot of complaints about the days being so short and Daylight Savings Time should be all year long, not just eight months. I will never go for DST all year long!

cinnamon rolls

Bits & Pieces – From games to homemade cinnamon rolls

The holidays are over and the New Year has arrived. School is back in session and most of us have settled down into a routine again.

My daughter, Tarra, and her son, Mason, came for a few days visit on Dec. 27th. We always have a good time and they usually bring a few games. One of the games we played was Clue, a game I had never played in my life. So, of course, it’s always fun to try to teach the old lady who has to play 100 times before she finally gets it. Obviously, we didn’t play 100 times because I only won one and I think that was by accident. On the other hand, Tarra won most of them with Mason winning a few.

Bits & Pieces – The scariest ride of my life!

Happy New Year friends! We made it to 2024 and everyone looks great! Wishing all of you the very best for this new year!

Looking back on past years, I’m reminded of the new year in 1973. It looked like any other new year except for one thing....I was pregnant with our second baby. Back in those days we didn’t have the technology that we do today, like telling what sex your baby will be, your due date, which was a lot more accurate than figuring up days according to your last cycle and even baby’s weight estimate now is more accurate.
