BHS Soccer Seniors recognized

In a testament to just how quickly the spring sports season and time in general goes, the Beardstown girls’ soccer team celebrated senior day last Saturday.

Lady Tigers Noemi Munoz, Xixi Marquez, Gaby Lucha, Ashley Gil-Molinero, Saray Chaparro and Estefani Ayala were recognized at halftime of the Riverton game for their contribution to Beardstown Soccer. In the game, the Tigers took out a week’s worth of frustration on the Hawks, winning 10 to 1.  Beardstown scored five goals in each half of the much-needed win. Senior Xixi Marquez poured in four goals while fellow senior Ashley Gil-Molinero had two. Junior Brandy Mendoza also had a monster game, notching four goals of her own.  Gil-Molinero had two assists and Leslie Sanchez, Marquez and Mendoza all had one.

Rough season for BHS Softball so far

Lady Tigers defeat Rebels

The Beardstown Lady Tiger softball team sandwiched a good win between a couple of tough losses last week. They fell at home to Rushville-Industry 14 to 11 then knocked off the South Fulton Rebels 12 to 0 at their place before falling at home to Western 6 to 4.  Errors continued to plague the Lady Tigers in their losses as they had seven in each of the defeats and only one in their victory.

Familiar face is new soccer coach

It did not take long for the Beardstown girls’ soccer team to get to know their new head coach and vice versa as long-time assistant Francisco Hernandez slides into the top spot this year. Hernandez takes over for Adam Hamilton just as he did in the fall for the boys’ program.  Hamilton was the head coach from the program’s inception in 2013 and he and Hernandez had slowly built the Tigers into a winner. Beardstown went 11-4-5 last year, their second consecutive winning season after eight straight losing seasons for the fledgling program. The Tigers will have to replace several key contributors from last year but have plenty of talented players ready.
