The Virginia-Triopia Junior High Track teams had a very successful week placing first in the girls’ seventh grade, eighth grade and combined and first in the boys eighth grade and combined and second in seventh grade at Camp Point on Monday. On Tuesday, at the St. Agnes meet they placed second in all but the boys combined where they placed third.

Pure joy! The AC-Central 7th grade volleyball team reacts after winning the final point of the Sectional Championship game to punch their ticket to the State Tournament. The Lady Knights post season run would take them all the way to Second Place in the state of Illinois in Class 1A.

Lady Knights are State runner up

The AC-Central seventh grade volleyball team’s postseason march took them all the way to the State Championship game.  Only a junior high sports juggernaut, West Lincoln-Broadwell, prevented the Lady Knights from becoming state champs.  A second-place finish in the state of Illinois in Class 1A is quite an accomplishment and the future is obviously bright for this group of young ladies.

Congratulations to the Triopia 8th grade volleyball team on their Regional Championship!

Lady Trojans fall in Sectional

The Triopia Lady Trojan eighth grade volleyball team’s season ended one game short of the state tournament.

Triopia faced off against Kinderhook-Western in the Our Saviors Sectional Championship game on Monday, March 11.  The Trojans lost 25-12, 25-16 to end their season at 16-9. Kinderhook moves on to the Class 1A State Tournament with a record of 19-3.

Three of the four Cass County seventh grade volleyball teams’ seasons ended last week in regional play.

The only surviving team did not play, as AC Central is the #1 seed in their own regional and received a bye in Saturday’s opening round. They were scheduled to play in the regional semifinal on Tuesday, February 27 against fifth seeded Springfield St. Agnes. The AC Central eighth grade team is the four seed in the Calvary Regional and open play on Saturday, March 2 at 9:00 a.m. against Jacksonville Our Savior. If they win, they play the host team later in the day at approximately 12:00 p.m.

Pawnee drops young Trojans

For the second straight year, the season of a very good Triopia Trojan eighth grade basketball team was ended by a very good Pawnee eighth grade basketball team.

After a second-round win over a pesky Springfield Little Flower team, the young Trojans lost to Pawnee 39 to 32 in the Regional Championship game held at Springfield Blessed Sacrament last Thursday.

Red Birds

Season ends for Redbirds

The Virginia Redbird eighth grade boys’ basketball season ended with a second-round regional loss to the top seeded hosts, Augusta Southeastern.

It was an ominous start for the Birds as they failed to score in the opening quarter but found themselves only down by five.  A 14 to 6 second frame gave the Suns a 19 to 6 halftime lead.  They would stretch the margin to 26 to 9 after three quarters.  The Redbirds won the fourth period 10 to 5 but it was too little too late in the season ending 31 to 19 loss.

Junior High Basketball action – B’town, Triopia & Virginia results

With the junior high boys’ basketball season well into postseason play, only a couple of local teams remain in the mix while a couple of squads bowed out last week.

The Beardstown eighth grade team finished off their season in the first round of the Pittsfield Regional with a 46 to 9 loss to top seeded Athens. The Warriors bolted to a 19 to 0 first quarter lead in the easy win.  It was 28 to 2 at the half and 31 to 9 after three quarters.  Brandon Figueroa had six points, Carter Ross scored two and Erick Mejia notched one in the season ending loss for the Tigers.

Triopia JH continues winning streak

The Triopia Junior High basketball teams continued to stack wins onto an already impressive season resume last week. The seventh grade Trojans beat A-C Central badly and lost a heartbreaker to South Fulton to move to 14-7 on the season. The eighth graders rolled to victory over both the Knights and the Rebels to improve to a stellar 17-4 on the year.
