BHS Soccer Seniors recognized

In a testament to just how quickly the spring sports season and time in general goes, the Beardstown girls’ soccer team celebrated senior day last Saturday.

Lady Tigers Noemi Munoz, Xixi Marquez, Gaby Lucha, Ashley Gil-Molinero, Saray Chaparro and Estefani Ayala were recognized at halftime of the Riverton game for their contribution to Beardstown Soccer. In the game, the Tigers took out a week’s worth of frustration on the Hawks, winning 10 to 1.  Beardstown scored five goals in each half of the much-needed win. Senior Xixi Marquez poured in four goals while fellow senior Ashley Gil-Molinero had two. Junior Brandy Mendoza also had a monster game, notching four goals of her own.  Gil-Molinero had two assists and Leslie Sanchez, Marquez and Mendoza all had one.

Earlier in the week the Tigers defeated Springfield Southeast 2 to 0 behind goals from Jocelyn Ojeda and Ashley Gil and an assist by Xixi Marquez. On Thursday the girls shot down the Bombers at Macomb 2 to 0. Marquez had both goals and Ojeda had an assist. The Lady Tigers improved to 8-2-2 on the season.

Familiar face is new soccer coach

It did not take long for the Beardstown girls’ soccer team to get to know their new head coach and vice versa as long-time assistant Francisco Hernandez slides into the top spot this year. Hernandez takes over for Adam Hamilton just as he did in the fall for the boys’ program.  Hamilton was the head coach from the program’s inception in 2013 and he and Hernandez had slowly built the Tigers into a winner. Beardstown went 11-4-5 last year, their second consecutive winning season after eight straight losing seasons for the fledgling program. The Tigers will have to replace several key contributors from last year but have plenty of talented players ready.

Strong start for BHS Soccer

The Beardstown Lady Tiger Soccer team is off to a strong start to the 2024 season.  Coach Francisco Hernandez and the girls traveled to Springfield last week for four games in the Lutheran Tournament.

Beardstown dropped a tough one in the opener, losing to Athens 3 to 1 on Monday.  The Lady Tigers bounced right back in game two, beating host Springfield Lutheran 8 to 0 on Tuesday.  On Thursday, BHS won a real barnburner over Unity Christian of Decatur, sneaking away with a 1 to 0 victory.  The Lady Tigers wrapped up a 3-1 week to start the season with a convincing 7 to 0 win over Taylorville on Friday.
