Just when it seemed like the Beardstown Tigers had built some momentum and had a chance to make a game of it with Calhoun, a familiar bugaboo came out to haunt the Tigers.
After falling behind 14 to 0 in the first quarter, the Tigers made a nice offensive drive taking the ball down to the six-yard line where they had it first in goal. Unfortunately, as has happened several times this year, Beardstown could not push the ball across the goal line from in close, turning it over on downs. The Warriors then took the ball the length of the field to score again and make it 21-0, then a flurry of second quarter touchdowns carried Calhoun to a 41-0 victory, ending the Tigers season. BHS finished 4-5 and although one 4-5 squad did make the IHSA playoffs, it was not the Tigers. The Warriors, under former Beardstown coach Aaron Elmore, finish 6-3, and entered the postseason on quite a run, having won their last four games by a combined score of 186-0.
With the rain ending just in time, it turned out to be a beautiful evening to honor our fall sports’ seniors and play a little football last Friday. The Tigers built a quick 24-0 lead and then held on for a 38-26
Boasting an offensive and defensive line averaging around 230 pounds and sporting several backs and receivers at or over the 200-pound mark, the Mendon Unity Mustangs put their size and strength to good use in a dominating 35 to 0 win over Beardstown on homecoming.
The Tiger defense is in hot pursuit of a Panther from Camp Point in the final junior high football game of the season.
The Beardstown Tiger football team had a great chance to finish off a stellar comeback last Friday night against Brown County at Mt. Sterling. In fact, BHS had a couple of great opportunities to score the winning points, but in the end some excellent goal line defense from the Hornets and too many Tiger mistakes sent Beardstown to a heartbreaking 24-22 loss. A plethora of penalties, bad snaps and fumbles allowed the Hornets to score the game’s first three touchdowns. Jack Anderson caught a 23-yard pass to give the Hornets a 6-0 lead in the first quarter then scored on an 11-yard run with 11:54 left in the second quarter and a 1-yard plunge with 5:36 left to make it 18-0 in favor of Brown County.
On an absolutely beautiful fall evening, the play on the field may not have always been pretty, but in the end the Beardstown Tigers had to feel great about picking up their third win of the year while spoiling Triopia’s homecoming with a 38 to 12 victory.
In addition to bringing home the highly sought-after “Black and Blue Trophy,” the Tigers moved that much closer to the five wins needed for a playoff berth. A valiant Trojan team kept the game close through the first half, but the Beardstown defense shut them out in the second half and slowly pulled away.
