Heart Healthy

A healthy diet can help people lower their risk for various conditions, including heart disease. That’s a significant benefit, as the World Health Organization estimates that 32 percent of deaths across the globe can be attributed to cardiovascular disease, which is an umbrella term used to refer to a group of disorders of the heart and blood vessels.

Warm up this winter with a steaming cup of tea!

January is National Hot Tea Month! Tea is widely consumed across the globe, and that could be paying healthy dividends for the billions of people who look forward to their daily cup each day. A small study published in the Journal of Hypertension found that drinking black tea could improve cardiovascular function. A separate study also found that drinking black tea and green tea could decrease risk of stroke and coronary heart disease. Black tea drinkers should keep in mind that, unlike most teas, black tea is caffeinated, so moderation is best to ensure the benefits of black tea are not offset by the overconsumption of caffeine.

September is National Suicide Prevention Month

On August 11, 2014, Actor/Comedian Robin Williams, age 63,  was found dead in his California home. The cause of death was determined to be suicide. Linkin Park’s lead vocalist Chester Bennington was found dead on July 20, 2017 at his Palos Verdes, California, home from what was believed to be an apparent suicide. He was only 41. Anthony Bourdain, a celebrity chef and travel television personality, committed suicide at the age of 61 in 2018. All three of these celebrity deaths came as a devastating shock to the world, because how could these men who seemed to be on top of their game choose to leave this world behind? All the families seem to say the same thing every time. That if only they saw the  signs leading up to the events, and been able to intervene and prevent it from ever occurring. But as the surviving party that’s all you feel like you can do in your grief is think about how you could have stopped it. If only you saw the signs. But the signs can be hard to see.
