On Tuesday, September 26, the Beardstown Middle School Cross Country team traveled to Liberty to run in the Liberty invite.  The boys’ team took fifth place and the girls’ team brought home tenth place. On the very tough Liberty course, several athletes were able to clinch a new personal best. Elsa DeWitt shaved thirteen seconds off her two-mile run.  Jomary Rodriuez shaved 1:27 off her previous best.  Liam Hymes finished his race 13 seconds faster than his best time, placing 14th and earning another medal.  Oscar Cortes cut 27 seconds off his previous best race time. Santiago Quintana was 29 seconds faster, John Haverback shaved 12 seconds off his time, Uriel Torrijos-Gil was 42 seconds faster than his best time. Tigers win black and blue trophy

On an absolutely beautiful fall evening, the play on the field may not have always been pretty, but in the end the Beardstown Tigers had to feel great about picking up their third win of the year while spoiling Triopia’s homecoming with a 38 to 12 victory.

In addition to bringing home the highly sought-after “Black and Blue Trophy,” the Tigers moved that much closer to the five wins needed for a playoff berth.  A valiant Trojan team kept the game close through the first half, but the Beardstown defense shut them out in the second half and slowly pulled away.

BHS Soccer gets double win

The Beardstown High School Soccer team picked up two home wins last week before falling on the road to Lincoln to finish the week.

On Monday, at the newly renovated BHS soccer field, the Tigers walloped Macomb high school with the varsity team winning 6-2.  The Tigers led 5-2 at the intermission and coasted to victory.  Marcos Lopez had a hat-trick (3 goals), Memo Hernandez added two goals, and Cesar Rodriguez scored one goal.  Michael Sevilla handed out two assists, and Joshua Severino, Lopez and Hernandez all had one helper.  The JV team also blasted the Bombers, winning by a score of 8-0.

Cade Ross nails hole-in-one for BHS

According to Google, an amateur golfer has a .01 % chance of getting a hole-in-one.  Stated another way, the odds of an amateur golfer hitting a hole-in-one are 12,500 to one.

So, when BHS golf coach Isaac Riddle sent in the news that during a meet at Hamilton last Wednesday, Tiger junior Cade Ross had hit “what could be described as the shot of the year…,” he was certainly understating the accomplishment.  For nearly all of the millions of golfers in the world, it never occurs, so it was certainly the shot of a lifetime for Cade.

Tigers outlast Rockets – BHS over Routt 46-44 in a wild one!

In a tale of two halves, the BHS Tigers did just enough in the second half to survive a valiant comeback attempt by the Routt Rockets and pull out a wild 46 to 44 home win last Friday night.  The Tigers built a 30-6 lead in the second quarter and led 30-14 at the half but failed to cover two onside kicks and gave up three touchdowns in the first three minutes of the third quarter to fall behind 38-30.  BHS still trailed 44-38 going into the fourth quarter.  With 10:20 left in the game, however, Tiger QB Ethan Heller willed his way to a 34-yard touchdown run, breaking several tackles along the way and followed it up with the 2-point conversion run to give the orange and black a 46-44 lead.  Although the scoring ended there, the excitement did not.

BHS Soccer wins home opener

The opening game at the newly renovated BHS Varsity Soccer field at the Beardstown Park District could not have worked out much better for the Tigers.  A great crowd fit comfortably into the spacious new bleachers, they could readily see the score and time remaining on the brand-new scoreboard and were able to get refreshments nearby at the newly opened concession stand.  Only the bathrooms remain to be finished at the freshly upgraded, JBS financed facility.
