Junior High Basketball Action – B’town, Triopia & Virginia Results

Due to the holiday, each of the area Junior High basketball teams played only one game last week.  Beardstown Tigers: Beardstown played on the road at Rushville on Monday with both teams dropping a tough one. The 7th graders trailed 8 to 7 after a quarter and 13 to 9 at the half before cutting the deficit to just one at 17 to 16 after three quarters. The Rockets would outscore the young Tigers 6 to 2 in the final frame to take the win 23 to 18.

BHS Cross Country awards

Cross Country Coach Jacki Kelly recently handed out awards for the 2023 Beardstown High School Cross Country team.

She was particularly proud of her team’s academic performance, noting that 100% of the team who were eligible for Academic All-Conference in the West Central Conference, were named to the team.  The only athletes who did not get recognized were the freshmen who are not eligible since they do not have a GPA established.

Busy week for Lady Tigers – 3-2 start for BHS Basketball

It was a crazy busy first week for the Beardstown Lady Tiger basketball team with five games including the double dip on Saturday in the Brown County Tournament. The Tigers are off to a 3-2 start with wins over Rushville-Industry, Payson-Seymour and Liberty and losses to Triopia-Virginia and Mendon-Unity.

Lady Tigers want to change gears

Normally only having one returning starter and having to replace an inside player who averaged double figures in points and rebounds and two solid guards would not lead to high hopes for an upcoming season.

The Beardstown Lady Tiger basketball team and head coach Jimmy Maltby find themselves in just that situation, but a dazzling array of newcomers and young talent has the eighth-year head mentor bursting with excitement about this year’s prospects. Last year’s team went 9-22

BHS Tiger Boys Basketball are senior laden

In a rarity in today’s small high school basketball arena, the Beardstown Tigers boast eight seniors on their roster, seven of whom return from last year.  All are athletic and should contribute this year.

Coach Eric Anderson, entering his ninth-year as top cat for the Tigers, does have to replace three starters from last year’s 14-18 team.  Gone are second leading scorer Owen Quigley (14ppg), defen

BHS Grapplers eager to hit the mat

The Beardstown High School Wrestling team has a lot to replace from last year’s team but there is no better way to do it than to strap on a singlet and some head gear and hit the mat.  Coach Joe Kolb, entering his seventh year as head coach and eight overall in Beardstown has a deep and eager group of athletes working hard to improve.  Last year’s team went 19-15 and four key wrestlers who combined for 125 individual wins will need to be replaced.  Replacing state fourth place winner Owen O’Hara, Blake Davis, Bryan Gil, and Jonny Marquez, will be hard to do, but trying will be the exciting part.
