Souper Bowl Spring 2024 Fundraiser

The Souper Bowl fundraiser benefitting Catholic Charities St. John’s Breadline will be serving up fresh soups to go. 

These made-from-scratch soups will be available on Friday, February 9th at the Catholic Pastoral Center circle driveway, 1615 W. Washington Street, Springfield, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m., or until sold out.

Following a very successful two-day 88 Hoops Classic basketball tournament, members of the BASA Black Attack and the BHS Tigers pose after their Classic capping game. In a game that was fun for everyone involved, the Black Attack won an exciting, high scoring affair over the varsity Tigers by three points.

Possible new building, zoning ordinance in the works

The Beardstown City Council met for a New Year’s meeting on January 2, 2004 to discuss the new Building and Zoning Ordinance that John Schnepper has been working on for several months now. Schnepper asked the council to really take a good look at it once the city attorney, Jeff Soltermann, returned it to the council. Beardstown Food Pantry provides food support for 10,000 in its first year

The Beardstown Food Pantry will officially mark the end of its first year of operation Sunday, Jan 14, by establishing an unexpected bench mark. In its first year of operation, the local pantry provided needed food assistance to feed more than 10,000 people.

“When we opened our doors last January 15, we had no idea what to expect,” said Joe Engelbrecht, food pantry president.  “All we knew when we started, was that there was a need. We had no idea how big that need was.”

The Family Credit Union, is highlighting an employee within their Beardstown branch. Branch manager, Adriana Estrada-Avalos, recently surpassed $5 million in loans. No other lender at their credit union has achieved this milestone. She is bringing in more loans than many other in-town branches.

BHS boys and girls basketball results

Following an overly busy holiday, the BHS boys’ and girls’ basketball squads each played just one game last week. The boys’ game originally scheduled for January 2 at West Hancock has been moved to January 18. 

The Tigers traveled to Clinton for a New Year’s shootout on Saturday and knocked off Cornerstone Christian out of Bloomington 67 to 49.

BJHS Tigers get swept away by Tornados

They played a game at home and a game on the road last week, but the result was the same each time for the Beardstown seventh and eighth grade boys’ basketball teams as they lost all four contests. On Tuesday, at home the Tigers lost to West Central and on Thursday on the road they fell to Griggsville-Perry.

Beardstown Jr and Sr High Wrestling results

The Beardstown Middle School Wrestling Team hosted their first home meet of the season last Thursday and swept the contest.  They slipped past Auburn 47 to 33 and crushed the Havana Ducks 72 to 24 to move to 8-2 on the season.  On Saturday the young Tigers finished in 9th place out of 18 teams at the Jacksonville Middle School Wrestling Tournament.  Individually, Jude Dawson

Tiger’s wrestle at Abe’s Rumble

The Beardstown Tiger Wrestling team capped a busy week and the calendar year by participating in the prestigious Abe’s Rumble in Springfield.  Earlier in the week the Tigers competed in a girls meet at Jacksonville and a Junior Varsity match at Springfield Southeast.  

Layla Garcia and Daisy Gil took to the mats for the Lady Tigers in the very first Jacksonville Girls’ Tourney and had a very good day.  Daisy finished in Fourth Place at 120 pounds while Layla won the Consolation Championship at 135 pounds.
