Beardstown 11/12 Softball in final four

The Beardstown Softball 11/12-year-old All Stars are one of four teams left with a shot at winning the Illinois State Championship. A 3-1 record in pool play gave the Tigers the right to advance to tourney play where they will definitely have a punchers’ chance. But so will the other three squads as the State Title will be decided in a one day, four-team, three-game, single elimination extravaganza on Wednesday, July 10.

Tri-County eliminates Tigers

A rough first game of the tournament against Tri-County sent the Beardstown 9/10-year-old all-star softball team into the loser’s bracket. From there they picked up a nice win over Brown County before getting a rematch with Tri-County.

Former city worker sentenced

Former Beardstown City Hall employee Melissa J. Espinoza, 42, pleaded guilty to theft of government property between $500 - $10,000 on July 1. She was arrested in May, 2023, after an investigation by Illinois State Police.

Agreement reached between Beardstown, UFCW 431

At the July 2 Beardstown City Council meeting, an agreement was reached between the City of Beardstown and the United Food & Commercial Workers Local 431 representing the Public Works and City Hall employees.

Emblem Club scholarships

This year’s Beardstown Emblem Club scholarships recipients were Bailey Draper (Emblem Club sponsor - Dena Turner [Aunt]) who was awarded a Club Scholarship ($1,000), and Jaelyn Simpson

Storms hit Beardstown on Tuesday, June 25 causing damage to several properties in the area. Trees fell on homes, poles were snapped off, power lines were downed. The public works storage shed (top photo) lost the entire west half of its roof. Gary Hamilton, Public Works Director, stated that most of the damage was south of 10th Street to the highway. Little League Baseball recap

The Beardstown Little League Baseball regular season wrapped up last week with a couple of games on Monday, June 17.  

In the 11/12-year-old opener, it was the Turbo Ink Blue Jays winning in a real pitchers’ duel over the Beardstown Fire Dept. Chiefs by a score of 3 to 2.  Drew Meyer tossed 5.1 innings for the Bluejays and allowed just one run on one hit and three walks with twelve strikeouts to earn the win.  Abel Martinez finished it off to get the save.

BHS needs new boys’ basketball coach

Beardstown High School Athletic Director Elliot Craig and the Board of Education are in the market for a new varsity boys’ basketball coach for the 2024-2025 season. 

 Due to family concerns, head coach Eric Anderson recently made the tough but necessary decision to step down from the position.  Anderson spent the past nine years as the top cat for the Tigers posting a 123-133 record including a very fine 22-10 season last year.
