Scouting for Food  for the Cass County Food Pantry

On Sunday, March 17, Boy Scouts from Troop 125 were tying plastic grocery bags to the doors of houses throughout Ashland.

Once again, they are collecting food items to be donated to the Cass County Food Pantry and would appreciate the community’s help as to support this valuable community outreach.

Troop members will return around 10 a.m. the next Saturday (March 23rd), to collect your bagged donations.

Bluejays Bat

Good Start for Lady Bluejays

It was a hot start to the season for the PORTA-AC Central softball team as they won a thrilling nine-inning battle on the road at Lincoln and trounced Beardstown at home to start the season with two wins.

The Jays made a huge, late comeback to win the opener over the Railers scoring four runs in the top of the seventh to tie the score at eight and send it to extra innings.  After neither team scored in the eighth the Bluejays got two in the ninth and Gabbie Branson closed the door on Lincoln in the bottom half to preserve a 10 to 8 victory.  Control was the key on the mound for Branson as she walked no one in nine innings, scattering 16 hits and striking out seven.  She also got it done at the plate going four for five with two RBIs.  Megan Miller had three hits and two RBIs, Greta Butler had two hits and two RBIs, Karlie Hoke had two hits and one RBI and Hailey Brown had one hit and one RBI for the Jays. Bailey Dahmer added a hit and scored, and Aubrey Vogel drew a walk and scored.

Little League Sports

PORTA-AC Central Baseball

It was a slow start to the season for the PORTA-AC Central baseball team as they lost twice on the road last week.  They dropped a tough one in the opener, losing 5 to 3 to Litchfield, then got doubled up 11 to 5 by Lewistown-Valley-Cuba with one bad inning costing them dearly.

Pure joy! The AC-Central 7th grade volleyball team reacts after winning the final point of the Sectional Championship game to punch their ticket to the State Tournament. The Lady Knights post season run would take them all the way to Second Place in the state of Illinois in Class 1A.

Lady Knights are State runner up

The AC-Central seventh grade volleyball team’s postseason march took them all the way to the State Championship game.  Only a junior high sports juggernaut, West Lincoln-Broadwell, prevented the Lady Knights from becoming state champs.  A second-place finish in the state of Illinois in Class 1A is quite an accomplishment and the future is obviously bright for this group of young ladies.

The Cub Scouts (and families) of Pack 125, with members from Ashland, Virginia, Chandlerville, and Philadelphia would like the thank the volunteer firefighters of the Ashland Fire Department for hosting the group on March 5. The scouts learned about safety equipment, explored vehicles, raced through the tunnel, and tried their hand at using the Jaws of Life and spraying the fire hose. (They even let scouts run the siren!) Photo submitted

A-C board supports co-op despite grievances

The A-C Central school board aired its complaints concerning the athletic co-op with PORTA, but still wants to stay in it and discussed pursuing a joint statement of support with PORTA school district. The discussion at last week’s board meeting followed a meeting with PORTA about the co-op attended by Trustees Debra Petefish and Curtis Cosner.
