Penny L. Powell, 62, Rushville, died Friday, June 9, 2023 at Rushville Nursing and Rehabilitation.

   She was born February 22, 1961, in Peoria, the daughter of Howard and Mildred “Mim” Brooks Leverton.

   She is survived by her sister, Paula (husband Robert) Kloker of Beardstown; a niece, Faith Ann Kloker of Springfield; four great nephews, Keegan, Drake, Jakob, and Beau; her aunt Linda, (husband Dick) Bebe of Monmouth; her dear friends, Stephanie Maxwell of Rushville and Col. Jeremie Hester of California; and her second family, Mike and Nitta Carey.

   She was preceded in death by her parents, her son, R. Darren “Big D” Powell, and a nephew, Christopher Kloker.

   Penny graduated from Woodruff High School in Peoria, in the class of class of 1979. She was a licensed cosmetologist and also loved being in the kitchen. She worked at Dairy Queen and Hardee’s, both in Beardstown and Rushville, and was active with Rushville Meals on Wheels program, served out of the senior center. Penny was a member of Hope Methodist Church in Rushville, and was an avid St. Louis Cardinals and Green Bay Packer Fan. She volunteered many hours for McDonough Area Special Olympics and cherished the time she was able to care for her son.

   Funeral services were held Tuesday, June 13, 2023 at Colwell Memorial Home in Beardstown, with Pastor Matt McAnally officiating. There was no burial.
