The season has come to a close for the Virginia-Meredosia-Triopia High School Track teams, at the IHSA State Championship Meet for the girls and at the Sectional Meet for the boys. For the girls, junior Faith Wingert finished in 29th place at State competition last weekend at Eastern Illinois University.
An always talented and somehow Class 2A Springfield Sacred Heart Griffin baseball team ended the Beardstown baseball season in the second round of regional play by a score of 11 to 1. The Tigers opened regional play with an exciting, 4 to 3, nine-inning win over New Berlin at home.
Proving the age-old sports’ adage that it is tough to beat a team three times, a slight upset at the hands of West Hancock ended the Beardstown High School softball team’s season in the first game of regional play.
For the second straight year, the Beardstown Tiger girls’ soccer team came, oh so close to winning their first regional title. The Lady Tigers fell to Macomb 2 to 1 last Wednesday in the Regional Championship game a year after losing to Monmouth-Roseville by just one score, 1 to 0.
PORTA-AC Central High School junior Maggie Zimmerman finished in eleventh place at the IHSA Class 1A State Track and Field Championship Meet last weekend at Eastern Illinois University. On the boys’ front, three Bluejays will be headed to EIU this coming weekend, all to battle it out in two events, for the State Championship Meet, by virtue of their performance at the Pleasant Plains Sectional last Wednesday.
The task at hand for the PORTA-AC Central High School baseball team was a tough one in the opening game of regional play last Wednesday; beat Quincy Notre Dame on their homefield. It would culminate in a disappointing end to a very good season.
The high school track season is nearing completion and will wrap up for Beardstown with the boys’ IHSA Class 2A State Championship Meet at Eastern Illinois University. Senior Marcos Laurencio will be representing the Tigers after placing eighth and beating the qualifying time in the 300 hurdles last Wednesday at the Class 2A Sectional in Metamora.
The PORTA-AC Central High School softball team lost to Stanford Olympia in the second round of regional play to end their season with an 11-13 record. The Lady Bluejays took down arch-rival Athens in the opening round, winning 5 to 4 on the Warriors homefield.
