After two years of post-shutdown rebuilding, Beardstown Christian Academy (BCA) has once again put a high school volleyball team on the court. The focus on building up a new team over the last couple years have come to fruit. The BCA team will be traveling to and hosting several area schools, both public and private, to play a busy schedule. BCA Administrator, Jim Bormann stated, “This effort is all about the kids. Virginia house fire leaves two dead

Virginia house fire leaves two dead   

Two people died in a house fire in Virginia on Thursday, September 7. The call came in at 10:53 p.m. for a house at 341 Springfield Street. Two people inside the house, Randy Lawson, 38, and his mother, Denise Lawson, 56, were pronounced dead at the scene. A third occupant, Wally Lawson, survived. Cause of the fire is not known at this time. Illinois State Fire Marshall’s office has been called in to investigate.

Moore arrested for meth

A Beardstown man was arrested September 6 for drug charges and warrants and lodged in Schuyler County Jail.

Beardstown Police and Cass County deputies observed Donald W. Moore, 55, at the intersection of 7th and Arenz Street. Officers knew Moore had two outstanding warrants with no bond for failure to appear for sentencing out of Cass County on drug-related charges and Macon County for failure to appear for drug related charges.

New employee introduced at Beardstown City Council meeting

Mike Gann was introduced to the Beardstown City Council at the September 5th, meeting as a new city employee to assist the Ordinance Officer Katie Vitale and Zoning Officer John Schnepper. He is a resident of Beardstown, married to Heidi, with two grown children, Connor and Gracie. Please take time to welcome him when you see him.

The council approved an ordinance authorizing and providing for the issuance of $2,918,000 Aggregate Principle of Sewerage Revenue Bonds, Series 2023A and $385,000 Aggregate Principal Amount of Sewerage Revenue Bonds, Series 2023B. Purpose of the bonds is for repairing, constructing, acquiring, improving and extending a sewerage system providing for the collection, segregation and distribution of the revenues of the sewerage system. There will also be grant funds available to help with the project.

Appointments made to several drainage districts 

Appointments to several drainage districts were made at the Cass County Board meeting held on Monday, September 11th. 

Drew Carls was appointed to the New Pankey Special Drainage District, Charles Taylor appointed to the South Sangamon Drainage District, David Wessel appointed to the Clear Lake Special Drainage District, and finally Ron Staake appointed to the Meredosia Lake Drainage and Levee District. Each appointee will serve a term ending September 2026.

A-C Central H S/Community to host Community Blood Drive  Sept. 29th

AC Central High School/Community will host a Community Blood Drive with ImpactLife, the provider of blood components for local hospitals. The blood drive will be from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m .on Friday, September 29th, at 601 W. Buchanan on the Donor Bus.

C’ville Fire Department to hold End of Summer Bash

Chandlerville Fire Department will hold its End of Summer Bash to help raise funds for the department. 

The event will be held at Daugherty’s Pub beginning at 11 a.m. on Saturday, September 16. They will be serving hand cut pork chop sandwiches with river chips and a variety of sides for a small fee.

Sangamon Valley Presbyterian observes 175th 

The Sangamon Valley Presbyterian Church, located on the Beardstown/Chandlerville blacktop, will be observing its 175th anniversary with a celebration on Sunday, September 24th.   The church was established in 1848, with the first service being held in the Hickory schoolhouse, near the current church building.  The church building was built in 1849, one-eighth mile northeast of the present structure.  The present church building was erected in 1892 with a dining room and kitchen being built under the church in 1947.
