Bluejays down Ducks

It was a quiet week for the PORTA-AC Central boys’ basketball team with just one game on the docket.  

The Jays welcomed the Havana Ducks to Ashland last Friday then sent them home on the wrong end of a 55 to 32 score, outscoring them in every quarter.

Virginia Junior High Basketball

The Virginia Redbird 7th grade boys’ basketball team won two of three games last week to move over .500 for the season with a record of 7-6. 

Meanwhile the 8th grade squad lost two heartbreakers in a three-loss week to fall to 3-10 on the year. Things started with a 38 to 25 home win over Greenview for the younger guys. The Birds were up 19 to 11 at the half but Greenview cut it to 25 to 21 after three.  A strong fourth quarter put it away for Virginia. Paxton P. scored 14 points, Tylan C. had 10, Cooper L. scored eight, Dace M. had four and Remi G. scored two for the winners.

Lady Tigers thrash Spartans

The Spartans were absolutely no match for the Tigers last week. On the other hand, the Warriors were ready to come out and play proved too much for the big cats on the hardwood.  In other words, the Beardstown Lady Tigers blasted both the Bushnell Prairie City and North Greene Spartans last week, putting running clocks on both, while the Athens Warriors came to town and knocked off Beardstown in an exciting game.

BHS Wrestling results

It was a busy week for the Beardstown Tiger Wrestling team with meets last Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. On Tuesday at Deer Creek the Tigers defeated Dee-Mack 36 to 27.  Winning for the Tigers were Efren Guijosa at 138 pounds, Luis De La Cruz at 144 pounds, Ryder Hamlin at 215 pounds, and Chunk Dailey at 285 pounds.

Lady Trojans win twice

The Triopia-Meredosia-Virginia Lady Trojans continued their winning ways with two victories last week to move to 5-2 on the season.   On the road on Monday, the Trojans rallied in the second half to defeat Greenfield-Northwestern 39 to 33. Triopia jumped out to a 9 to 4 lead after a quarter, but the Tigers came back to tie it up at thirteen at the half. The Trojans would win both the third and fourth quarters, t

Fire on Kent Feed Road injures one

A fire on Kent Feed Road outside of Beardstown last Sunday did significant damage to the building but was not a total loss.

Beardstown Acting Fire Chief Brandon Hager said the call came in at approximately 12:30 p.m. for a commercial structure fire.

Pratt honored at council meeting

Wayne Pratt was honored at the November 21st Beardstown City Council meeting for his 50 years of service on the Beardstown Rescue Squad and Volunteer Fire Department. 

   Mayor Tim Harris read a Resolution of Gratitude honoring Mr. Pratt. His fellow firemen also presented him with a picture collage filled with memories of their time together. Present for the presentation were several family members and fellow firefighters. Thank you, Mr. Pratt, for your service to both your community and your country, it has not gone unnoticed.

Area fire departments receive grants

Cass-Morgan Farm Bureau (CMFB) would like to proudly recognize recipients of the 3rd annual Agriculture and Rural Fire Protection Grant.

CMFB Vice President Doug Coop said, “This grant was created to assist local fire departments and fire protection districts in what they deem essential for their crews to be better prepared for rural and farm emergencies.”  After careful consideration by a committee of members, the following local fire departments were awarded:

The 2023 Little Miss & Mr. Christmas, Cecilia Stock (left) and Trae Gaffney. Cecilia is the daughter of Kayla Stock and the late Andrew Stock. Trae is the son of Heather McCombs and DeAndre Gaffney. Congratulations!

The annual Lighted Christmas Parade kicked off the celebrations Saturday evening in Beardstown. The  Little Miss & Mr. Christmas Pageant followed, along with visits with Santa, free carriage rides and the start of the Christkindlmarket.
