Beardstown golf coach Isaac Riddle and volleyball coach Emily Vermillion recently announced their season award winners at their fall banquet.  For the boys’ golf team, Cade Ross received the plaque for Lowest Average. On the girls’ side, Saray Chaparro received the award for Lowest Average and Daisy Gil was named Most Improved.  Ross and Chaparro were also named Academic All-Conference for the West Central Conference along with Grady O’Hara, Peri Herzog, and Mary Escobar.

BJHS boys and girls basketball action

The Beardstown girls’ seventh grade basketball team’s season ended in the first round of the 3A regional at Camp Point last Saturday at the hands of Quincy St. Peter by a score of 31-10.  Rounding out the regular season, the young Lady Tigers lost to Liberty 42-12 and to Rushville-Industry 21-10.

Three Bluejays sign with colleges

Three PORTA-AC Central Bluejay senior athletes signed their name on the dotted line to compete at the college level last Wednesday as part of National Signing Day.  

    Jayce Privia signed with McKendree University to play basketball.  The Bearcats are a Division II school located in Lebanon.  Trace Donnan inked with Augustana and will play golf.  The Vikings are a Division III school located in Rock Island.  Finally, Haven Gronewold signed to run cross country and track and field with Stetson University. The Hatters are Division I and are located in Deland, Florida.

Fire destroys home at Evergreen Acres

A fire completely destroyed a home in Evergreen Acres Friday, November 10.

Beardstown Fire Chief Brandon Hager said the call came in at 7 a.m. and was on Shady Oak Lane.

Arenzville

Arenzville to tackle sludge problem

Arenzville Village Board approved the purchase of a jon boat and trolling motor that will be used to sound a lagoon that needs to have a sludge removed. The sludge has been a problem for several years. The boat and motor will determine the areas that are in most need for dredging.

Ashland Fire Station

Ashland Fire Board sets tax levy hearing

The Ashland Fire Protection District Board set a tax levy hearing for Nov. 21 at last week’s meeting of the board. The board expects to vote on the 2023-2024 levy at the 7 p.m. regular meeting that will immediately follow the levy hearing.   Fire Chief Tyler Latham said the Illinois EPA is going to require lead paint testing prior to burning houses. This is on top of other testing and other checkoffs with state officials required by law. He also said the permits cost $150 and assured the board that he makes sure the district has the permit before doing the burn.

Virginia JH boys open hoops season

The Virginia Junior High School boys’ basketball teams opened their season last week with the 7th grade team winning both games and the 8th graders winning one out of two.  On the road at Kincaid, the seventh graders jumped out to an early lead and held on for the win over the South Fork Ponies. Virginia led 9-2 after a quarter and 17-6 at the half on their way to a 25-14 victory.  T. Cooper and P. Petefish were both in double figures with 12 and 11 respectively.  C. Lane had the final two points in the Redbirds win.
