Village of Chapin to begin spring cleanup 

The Village of Chapin is beginning Spring Cleanup. Trustees recently heard a complaint from a resident concerning unkept properties within the village. The properties are in violation of ordinance in regards to abandoned vehicles and debris in view of the public. The properties had been made aware of the violations in the past and the police department will visit with them again.

Street repairs to be completed in the near future

The Beardstown City Council approved the fourth payment resolution in the amount of $764,158.40 for the USDA Sanitary Sewer Replacement project (Hood Construction Group Midwest LLCC $734,699.60 and $29,458.80 to Benton & Associates). With this payment the infrastructure is complete, now the concrete work for the streets and curbs will begin. Weather permitting, this work will begin this week on Washington Street and hopefully be completed throughout Beardstown sometime by the end of May.

Willow was born on March 1, 2018. She is very energetic and loves to run and roll in the grass. She is is a goofy girl who is good with kids. This beautiful girl, along with all other animals at SCHS (Schuyler County Humane Society) will be spayed/neutered, microchipped, and vaccinated before adoption.

Community Calendar

The Kirsta Anderson Benefit will be held from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday, May 18th at the Round House Event Center in Beardstown. There is a small cover charge that includes a meal and kids’ activities.

Current estate tax policy burden on family farms

Jeff Brooks, Whiteside County Farm Bureau member, faced an unprecedented challenge when he lost his father in 2023 — the weight of the Illinois estate tax.

“This burden is putting pressure on the current operations of our family farm,” Brooks testified April 12 before members of the Illinois House Revenue and Finance Committee. “In March of 2023, still coping with my father’s passing, we learned the amount of a significant payment that was still due on our farming operation.”

Matt Owens

New Jr/Sr High Principal at Virginia

Matt Owens is joining Virginia Jr/Sr High as the new principal. He will be joining the staff after extensive leadership experience with the U.S. Army, and teaching experience at Sycamore High School, Carbondale High School, and John A. Logan College. Owens’ college work includes Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, Illinois State University, Northern Illinois University, and the College of William and Mary. He taught science while in the classroom - chemistry in particular. 

A two-vehicle crash on April 10 struck a utility pole which Ameren had to replace. According to a Beardstown Police report, Dillon McNeff, Beardstown, was driving a 2002 Mitsubishi northbound on Canal Street when he failed to yield right of way and struck a 1994 Ford pickup truck driven by Carlos E. Memorial Health Accepting Apps for Healthcare Careers Camp

Memorial Health is accepting applications to a free three-day health care careers summer camp for rising junior and senior high school students to be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 10-12 at the Memorial Learning Center.

Campers will participate in hands-on learning activities that bring the medical field to life. Informative learning opportunities include interaction with Memorial colleagues, college faculty and undergraduate students.
