Cass County Retired Teachers

The Cass County Retired Teachers (CCRT) met April 23 at the Elks Club in Beardstown.

Twenty-two teachers and three guests enjoyed lunch and a program given by Tammee Peterson, Language Aquistion Administrator at Beardstown CUSD #15.

The next meeting will be held at noon on Tuesday, May 21 with Cass County Sheriff Devron Ohrn presenting the program. 

The CCRT meets four times a year. All Cass County retired teachers are welcome to attend.

Scouts march to honor Lincoln

Beardstown Cub Scout Pack 127 and Scouts BSA Troop 127 took part in the 79th annual Abraham Lincoln Pilgrimage on Sunday, April 28th in Springfield. Hundreds of scouts from eight different states marched from Lincoln’s Tomb to the Old State Capitol in honor of the 16th president of the United States of America. Pictured on the top right is Beardstown Scout Leader Randy Pherigo, shown leading the way with his son, Webelo Luke Pherigo, Scout Master Phillip Hadden and Webelo Carson Hammack following. Pherigo said the scouts meet at 6:30 p.m. every Thursday at St. Alexius Catholic Church, 215 West 6th Street, Beardstown. Boys ages 5-10 (Cub Scouts) and 10-14 (Boy Scouts) are encouraged and welcomed to join any Thursday. Photos submitted.

Sergio Feliciano, 18, Beardstown, was given a written warning for registration light on April 22.

Jesus Flores-Villegas, 29, Beardstown, was cited for operating a motor vehicle with suspended registration, no insurance, no valid DL, improper use of registration sticker, and an expired registration on April 22.

Tonya L. White, 56, Beardstown, was cited for driving while revoked and failure to yield private drive on April 22.

Bits & Pieces – A PSA for my dear readers

This week’s column will be a little different than what you’re used to reading. Yes, I enjoy it when many of you have commented on the humor that I share with you, especially about my family. But today will not be entertaining you with humor but with concern for you and hopefully, some preventive care. 

A little over a week ago I was diagnosed with squamous cell skin cancer. I wish I could tell you this was my first one but unfortunately it’s not. Note: there is a picture in this column of my latest skin cancer.

Community Calendar

The Gifts from Maggie Memorial Ride will be held starting at noon on May 4th at Daugherty’s Pub in Chandlerville. Purpose of the ride is to raise funds for the Christmas program and to assist local families throughout the year. There will be a 50/50 drawing, food, music, games and much more. The Kirsta Anderson Benefit will be held from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday, May 18th at the Round House Event Center in Beardstown. There is a small cover charge that includes a meal and kids’ activities.

The senior members of the BHS Track Team and their families were recognized at Senior Day last week.

Tiger Track Seniors honored

Beardstown High School recognized their senior track athletes at a home meet last week.  

Christy Domitien, Gavin Epping, CJ Evans, Emma Ford-DeWitt, Karim Gomez, Deyvi Javier, Delma Salazar, and Chris Tchaklizo were all thanked for their contribution to Tiger Track.

Pet of the Week

Blizzard was born in September of 2023 and came to the Humane Society on January 18, 2024. He has a unique pattern in his fur and is very handsome. He is very cuddly and loves attention. He has a lot of energy and loves to play. This sweet boy, along with all other animals at SCHS will be spayed/neutered, microchipped, and vaccinated before adoption. You can meet Blizzard and all pets at Schuyler County Humane Society, 17000 County Farm Road in Rushville. Baseball

Trojans slay Wolves

The Triopia-Meredosia-Virginia baseball team shut out the Pleasant Hill Wolves but lost to the Routt Rockets last week to move their season record to 6-13.  

On Monday at home, the Trojans scored a run in the bottom of the first against Jacksonville Routt but did not score again in a 7 to 1 loss. The Rockets took the lead for good with four in the second and added three in the seventh to sew it up. The big blue had just five hits with Jacob Cook and Gameli White having two each and Cooper Parrish having one and driving in the only run. Brock York walked and scored for the Trojans.
