A Show & Tell Antique Farm and Car exhibit will be held beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 1 at the Bethel Church Park, 13068 Bethel Church Road, Arenzville. It’s located three miles south of Bluff Springs. There will be a free lunch served from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
As most of you know, I like to write. I’ve always liked to write for pleasure, but when I was in high school there were certain subjects I didn’t like to write. History was one of those subjects.
I had one of the greatest history teachers ever and that was Adele Hegener. Adele knew her history backwards and forward and she loved sharing what she knew. The problem was I simply didn’t like history. It wasn’t until I was an adult and started studying the Bible that I realized the importance of history and how it affects all of us.
I recall a conversation I had with my father about war. I was around 12 years of age when I began to realize that war was more than playing with my green army men in the back yard sandbox. We had stayed up late one night to watch the 1955 classic, “To Hell and Back,” starring Audie Murphy, playing himself in the title role, as the most decorated Army soldier during WWII.

In boy’s Little League 9- and 10-year-old action on Monday, May 20th, Beardstown’s AC Jones Trucking Red Sox beat the Brown County Wolfpack 8 to 4.
For the Red Sox, Jrue Gaffney pitched two innings and gave up one hit and one run while striking out six. Rawlings Colwell and Acen Schaver combined to finish the last three innings, allowing three runs while striking out four Wolves each. Gaffney went 2 for 2 at the plate with a double, a triple, a walk, and an RBI. Trance Savage, Miguel Montoya, and Isaiah Hernandez all added hits for the Red Sox who improved to 6-0.
The Beardstown Lady Tigers concluded their soccer season with the spring sports banquet last week.
According to assistant coach Eduardo Rios, “in soccer, individual awards recognize exceptional performances within the team context. They highlight standout players’ contributions to their team’s success. The student-athletes who receive these awards showed dedication, hard work, and positive attitudes throughout the season.”
Coach Jimmy Maltby and the improving Beardstown Lady Tiger varsity basketball team will be hosting a June summer league on Tuesdays at the Tiger Den. Triopia-Meredosia-Virginia and PORTA-AC Central will join the hosts and Rushville, Brown County (BC) and West Central in the league.
Play opens June 4th with Beardstown playing Rushville at 4:45 and West Central at 7:00. Triopia takes on Brown County at 4:00 and PORTA-AC at 6:15. The Lady Bluejays play West Central at 7:45.
A great track and field season ended at the IHSA State Championships for the PORTA-AC Central Bluejays boys team with some great finishes. Bryson Schachtsiek placed sixth in the 300 hurdles finishing in a time of 41.18. He placed 28th in the long jump with a leap of 5.96 meters. Isaac Rennecker finished ninth in the triple jump, bounding 12.83 meters and fifteenth in the high jump, clearing 1.8 meters. Daxton Trueblood finished 18th in the 800 meters running a time of 2:02.56. Jacob Vogel ended in 26th place in the 200 meter dash, sprinting a time of 23.25.
The Beardstown girls’ and boys’ track and field teams recognized several athletes at the season ending awards banquet.
According to girls’ coach Jacki Kelly, “this season the girls track team finished with 14 athletes. The girls had a great season, with individuals bringing home hardware from every medal meet we competed in. Although we were bumped to 2A, the girls tied for 10th place out of 16 teams at sectionals. They were a team of fourteen girls competing with schools that had rosters with up to seventy-five athletes.”
How many times have you heard, “Grandma, whatcha doin’?" and Grandma replies, “Come here and I’ll show you.”
I can only imagine this same conversation between a ten- to-twelve-year-old Beverly Jockisch and her grandmother Woost. Maybe it was out of boredom or plain curiosity that made Beverly pick up a pair of crocheting hooks so many years ago, and she hasn’t put them down since.
