Tick

Good Growing – A bad year for ticks? Take steps to protect yourself

Ticks! I can’t stand these parasitic arachnids. I have had far too many run-ins with ticks throughout my life. They seem to find me every year. So far this spring I have found one lone star tick (Amblyomma americanum) attached to me and I have caught several other ticks headed my way looking for a bite to eat.

Fortunately, lone star ticks are not known to transmit Lyme disease, but there are plenty of other ailments they can impart to their human host. One such affliction is the dreaded alpha-gal syndrome that makes humans allergic to red meat.

Illinois 103 in Schuyler County to close June 3

The Illinois Department of Transportation announces that Illinois 103 between U.S. 24 and U.S. 67 in Schuyler County will close Monday, June 3.

The closure is necessary to remove and resurface more than seven miles of the road. Additional work for this $12 million project includes slope stabilization and guardrail replacement. The stabilization is needed just east of Sand Ridge Road to prevent further deterioration of the slope and to maintain the safety for motorists. With the new driving surface and other improvements, this will help increase the life of the road. Work is expected to be complete by the end of August.

Garfield, a tabby cat

Pet of the Week

Garfield is a handsome, two-year-old who loves his food. He is affectionate, rambunctious, but also calm. Due to being FIV positive, there is no adoption fee; we would just love to see him go into a great home and find his forever family! FIV is an immouno-suppressing virus. FIV typically spreads from cat to cat by bite wounds. FIV is not transmittable to other species, and cats with FIV typically live full, happy lives. This goofy boy, along with all other animals at SCHS will be spayed/neutered, microchipped, and vaccinated before adoption. You can meet Garfield and all pets at Schuyler County Humane Society, 17000 County Farm Road in Rushville. Visitor hours are Tuesdays from 4-7 p.m., Saturdays from 9 a.m.-noon, and Sundays from 11 a.m.- 2 p.m. You can also make an appointment by calling (217) 322-2220. Applications are available online at https://schuylerhs.com/adopt/application/.
