Inviting Illinoisans to celebrate statesmanship in the Prairie State

As we all know, the United States is in the midst of a bitterly contentious political campaign in which the presidency and control of Congress are in question. Analysts say that the United States faces graver threats to its national security than it has in decades, perhaps ever. War is raging in Europe and the Middle East; tensions are rising in Asia; tempers are flaring across America.

Bits and pieces

Bits & Pieces – How did I do that?

As you well know, my 20 y/o grandson, Mason, is my tech person, the one who gets my phone back to normal after my magic fingers screw it up. His favorite question is;

“Grandma, how did you do this?”

My best and always response is;

“I have no idea.”

I recently had an unexplainable situation with my car. And that question popped up again.

I take my car to the dealership to be serviced regularly. A couple of weeks ago it was time for an oil change and its usual checkup.

Good Growing – Spotting the danger: toxic plants that look like carrots

The other day, I had the opportunity to chaperone a school group at a local state park. While on the field trip, a volunteer-led the students on a nature hike through the woodlands. At one point during the hike, the group leader grabbed a handful of two plants to share with the students but in doing so, misidentified one of the plants. Luckily it wasn’t a harmful plant that was picked. Yet, as I scanned our surroundings, noting stinging nettles and poison ivy, it reminded me of the importance of knowing which plants have the potential to cause harm.
