Jesse Louis Elmore, 81, of Abingdon, passed away at 6:42 a.m. Wednesday, July 27, at Galesburg Cottage Hospital.
He was born July 6, 1935 in Beardstown, the son of Jesse James and Bessie Mae Tucker Elmore. He married Peg Baer Bankes on Aug. 18, 1962 in Beardstown.
Jesse is survived by his wife of 54 years, Peg; two sons, Charles “Chuck” (Lisa) Bankes of Galesburg and Jon Elmore of Abingdon; two daughters, Amy (Warren) Thurow of Utica and Jan (Doug) Anderson of Knoxville; nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild; three brothers, Burl Elmore of Port Richey, Fla., Don (Betty) Elmore of Aurora, and Leonard Elmore of Beardstown.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Alzada Redshaw; one daughter-in-law, Sheryl Bankes; and two sisters-in-law, Virginia Elmore and Ardene Elmore.
He graduated from Beardstown High School in 1953. He served in the Army during the Korean War. He worked as a clerk for the Burlington Northern Railroad for over 40 years, retiring in 1996. He was a member of the former Abingdon Congregational Church. He enjoyed duck hunting on the Illinois River with family and friends, fishing, watching St. Louis Cardinal baseball, and spending time with his grandchildren.
Cremation was accorded. To celebrate his life, visitation was held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, July 29, at the Hinchliff-Pearson-West Abingdon Chapel.
