Virginia council hires temporary officer

Following a 65-minute executive session Tuesday evening, the Virginia City Council approved the hiring of Bryce Kennedy as a temporary part-time police officer.

However, there was no public discussion regarding the status of Police Chief Wesley D. Helmich. On Aug. 19, the chief was cited for DUI by the Illinois State Police following a late afternoon motorcycle accident with injuries in northeastern Arenzville Township.

Alderman Ott Wulf, chair of the City Council’s Police Committee, said Kennedy will work 30 hours per week on a temporary basis. A Cass County resident, Kennedy previously worked as a part-time Virginia police officer for at least one year. &nbsp;&nbsp;<ahref=""><spanstyl... 13px; color: rgb(0, 0, 0);">To view more, please log in or subscribe to the digital edition.</span></a></p>
