Virginia Police Chief cited for DUI

motorcycle crash leads to arrest

Virginia Police Chief Wesley D. Helmich has been cited for DUI by the Illinois State Police as a result of a late Sunday afternoon motorcycle accident in northeastern Arenzville Township.

At this time, Helmich’s status with the Virginia Police Department is unknown. It also is not known when or if Helmich will return to duty or if any provisions have been made in the interim for police protection in Virginia.

Helmich 30, was taken by helicopter to Memorial Medical Center in Springfield. A hospital spokesperson said Helmich was treated in the emergency room and released.
