John Robert Cox
John Robert Cox, 97, of Virginia, passed away at Walker Nursing Home in Virginia at 7:42 p.m. on Tuesday, July 3.
He was born July 22, 1920, in Virginia to John and Frances (Collins) Cox. He married Opal Anderson on Nov. 23, 1940, in Bowling Green, MO. She preceded him in death on Aug. 8, 1990. He later married Mary Decker and she preceded him in death in 2012.
Mr. Cox is survived by three children: Janet (Fuzz) Boyd of Virginia, Bob (Wanda) Cox of Virginia and Sandra White of Jacksonville, 12 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and many great-great grand- children and great-great- great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two wives; daughter, June Hughes Dax; 11 brothers and sisters: Coca Drummond, James Cox, Louis Cox, Myrtle Lane, Javan Cox, Claude Cox, Delbert Cox, Raymond Cox, Ruth Jones, Freda Brown and Pauline Barbee.
Mr. Cox started working with horses when he was just 6 years old. Throughout his life, he had trained and broken horses. He was also a well known horseshoer. Several newspaper articles were written about his ability to train horses to do tricks as well as his affinity for square dancing. He had also farmed for many years. He was a very friendly and outgoing man who loved his life.
Funeral services were held at Lintner-Hurley Funeral Home in Chandlerville at 11 a.m. Monday, July 9. Burial followed at Walnut Ridge Cemetery in Virginia. Rev. Cal Forman officiated.
