Senator William Dieterich: lawyer, judge, senator

While crossing the Illinois River at Beardstown, you may have noticed the bridge is named in honor of William H. Dieterich. If you have never heard of Dieterich, you are not alone.

There was a time when Dieterich was known throughout Illinois, but I’m getting ahead of the story. Dieterich was born across the river on a farm near Cooperstown in Brown County on March 31, 1876.

Dieterich had no intention of becoming a farmer. Instead, he earned a law degree and opened his legal practice in Rushville in 1901. He would serve as Rushville’s city attorney (1903-1907) and as a Schuyler County judge (1906-1910). &nbsp;&nbsp;<ahref=""><spanstyl... 13px; color: rgb(0, 0, 0);">To view more, please log in or subscribe to the digital edition.</span></a></p>
