Coles wins governor's seat by slimmest of margins

Despite the strength of Il- linois’ pro-slavery forces, Ed- ward Coles managed to become the state’s second governor by the slimmest of margins.

Opposing Coles was Jesse B. Phillips. Unfortunately for Phillips, this was the era be- fore established political par- ties. Thus, another pro-slavery candidate, Thomas C. Browne, joined the race. Not surprising- ly, Phillips and Browne man- aged to split the pro-slavery vote, allowing Coles to win by a mere plurality of 167 votes. <ahref=""><spanstyl... 13px; color: rgb(0, 0, 0);">To view more, please log in or subscribe to the digital edition.
