Beardstown’s modernized railroad bridge
Beardstown’s Wagon Bridge swing span had notorious reputation among river pilots who considered it a hazard to navigation. In time, the Army Corps of Engineers would agree. The bridge was retired in 1955.
Equally perilous (some argue it was more so) was the swing span section of the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad bridge. That swing span would open to allow the passage of river traffic and close for trains.
