Admiring the accents of the world
Greetings from the Ridge.
I was standing in line behind a lady at the registration desk of a hotel in Dublin, Ireland, when I heard an interesting exchange. This gal was what they used to call the “Ugly American,” insisting that wherever she went it was to be just like her home back in the States. The desk clerk was trying to explain how to get to a nearby restaurant and his Irish accent absolutely dripped all over the registration desk. Delightful. But the dear idiot standing in front of me wasn’t even trying to understand him. She hurried away from the counter in disgust and as she passed me, she muttered, “You’d think these people would learn how to speak English.” Sweetheart, they were doing it a thousand years before Columbus bumped into the East Coast.
