Physician, Lawyer, and a Confederate Veteran

Here’s one for Ripley’s Believe It or Not: a Confederate Veteran is buried in Cass County.
Virginia’s Walnut Ridge Cemetery is the final resting place of a physician, lawyer, state representative, archaeologist, a co-founder of the Illinois State Historical Society, and Confederate Army officer.
The son of Illinois politician Adam W. Snyder, John Francis Snyder earned his medical degree from McDowell’s Medical College, St. Louis, in 1853. He would move to Bolivar, Mo., where he practiced medicine, wrote for (and later edited) the local newspaper, met and married Anne Eliza Saunders, and joined a group of volunteers who fought against John Brown in Kansas. He also studied the law and was admitted to the Missouri bar in April of 1859.
