Virginia welcomes new school superintendent

A veteran educator who began his teaching career in Beardstown will take the helm of Virginia School District on July 1.
On Monday evening, Gary DePatis, 54, was named superintendent by the Virginia Board of Education. He comes to Virginia from the Morrisonville School District in Christian County where he has been superintendent since 2015.
“I like rural school districts,” DePatis replied when asked why he accepted the Virginia position, acknowledging that he once weighed the possibility of seeking a position in one of the Chicago collar counties. Upon further consideration, he decided smaller downstate districts were his preference.
