Groups rally to help community
Amid a major crisis, there is often a ray of light. Citizens rise to the occasion. They see a need in their community and try to fill it.
Such is the case as Life Family Church, the Beardstown Elks Club and JBS partnered to offer the community free pork chop sandwiches last weekend, an act of kindness and generosity during a time of uncertainty and worry.
“We saw a need,” said Frank Shaw, a member of Life Family Church located on Rt. 125, as schools are closed and many are out of work due to business closures and staff reductions caused by the coronavirus threat. About 800 sandwiches were distributed each day, according to John Ryman, chairman of the Elks Club trustees.
The meal giveaway will be held again this weekend from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday and Sunday behind the Elks lodge.
