Gerhardt’s ‘O Jesus Christ, Thy Manger Is’

I’m going to share Focus on Faith articles for December with Vicar Phillip Fischaber. We will be presenting short articles on select verses from a beautiful Christmas Hymn written by 17th century Lutheran theologian and hymn writer Paul Gerhardt. The Hymn for our reflection and meditation is “O Jesus Christ, Thy Manger Is.”
Paul Gerhardt was one of Germany’s beloved hymn writers. He was born on March 12, 1607 near Wittenberg, Germany, where Dr. Martin Luther taught the century earlier. Gerhardt’s hymns were appreciated as poetic. Even his reformed doctrinal opponents accepted and loved his hymnody. He composed only one hundred and twenty-three hymns. Among his most famous hymns are “O sacred Head, now wounded” and “Jesus, Thy boundless love to me.”
