Cass County SWCD holds 69th annual meeting

The 69th Annual Meeting of the Cass County Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) was held on Feb. 10 at St. Luke’s Hall in Virginia, with 81 people in attendance. The meeting began with a catered meal from Kelly Cagle of the Depot. During the business meeting Curtis Mefford and John Winkelman were reelected and Jack Hardwick was elected as a new board member for a two-year term on the board of directors.
Kim Smail, District Conservationist, gave a demonstration on how much soil there is on earth by peeling an apple, doing away with areas that are covered by water or contain unfarmable soil.  This gave a visual representation of how little soil there is available for crop production. The mission of the soil and water districts has always been to help protect and maintain the small amount of productive soil that is available here on earth and to help improve water quality by taking care of sediment and erosion issues.
