Beardstown council sells old glove factory

The Beardstown City Council voted in favor of accepting a bid from Andrew Chen for $5,000 to purchase the old glove factory building located at 217 E Main Street at Tuesday night’s meeting.
According to Mayor Patterson, Mr. Chen will put half a million dollars into the building directly after purchasing it to get his fish factory up and running. Alderman Tim Harris expressed concern that once the city no longer owns the building, it will be difficult to ensure that the work is completed.
The council also heard from Beardstown’s city lawyer, Tom Veith, regarding the Property Maintenance Code. Even after Veith gave a detailed explanation as to why he would encourage the council to pass the ordinance striking the appeals board from the code, the ordinance barely passed, with Leslie Harris, Mary Davis, and Kennia Erickson voting “no.”
