$4 million housing project is well underway

Affordable housing applications being accepted Thursday

When plans for a $4 million affordable housing project in Virginia were unveiled in 2015, there were a good number of skeptics who predicted it would never be built.

After a few bumps along the way, the project not only secured final Illinois Housing Development Authority (IHDA) approval, but construction now is on the fast track. A total of 20 single family homes will be built on a 7-acre parcel of land just west of Virginia’s Jennie Marr Dunaway Memorial Park. Virginia has annexed this land.

The first two homes – a two-story and a one-story – are expected to be ready for occupancy by the middle of September, according to Laymon Carter, president of the nonprofit Cass Affordable Housing Initiative (CAHI).

“Thanks to favorable weather, construction is right on schedule,” Carter said. &nbsp;&nbsp;<ahref="http://etypeservices.com/Cass%20County%20Star%20GazetteID497/"><spanstyl... 13px; color: rgb(0, 0, 0);">To view more, please log in or subscribe to the digital edition.</span></a></p>
