Charles and Hazel: A love story

I was trained as an infantry replacement at Camp Walters, Texas. I arrived in England on Jan. 8, 1944 and went by train to Camp Houndstone. Shortly after arrival, I was assigned to the 17th Replacement Depot (a break for me). I remember all the barrage balloons in the sky and when air raid sirens sounded, getting up and going outside and seeing searchlights and fighter planes as the German bombers went over. I can still remember the drones of the German planes.
