Rising Illinois River challenges Beardstown

    When the Illinois River reached the 28.8-foot mark, Mayor Fred Cline issued an emergency proclamation the morning of May 22, 1943. Concerned the river would top the 30-foot mark and inundate the community, Cline urged all residents – most especially women, children and the aged – to leave the city.
