Cass County gets a railroad

Tech stocks are the darlings of investors these days, but when Illinois was young it was railroads that attracted investors’ attention and dollars.
Abetted by promoters, iron horse fever swept the state in the 1850s. Among those promoters was Richard Yates, the man who would become Illinois’ Civil War governor.  Yates headed a group that formed the Tonica & Petersburg Railroad in 1857.
